The Shard and Park House Host Interactive Recycling Experience in Collaboration with Recorra
The Shard and Park House held an interactive and educational recycling event in partnership with Recorra, aiming to raise awareness of the environmental impacts of plastic pollution and proper recycling methods. The event, which took place over two to three hours during the lunchtime rush, focused on engaging building occupants with fun, hands-on activities to highlight the importance of recycling.
A variety of interactive games were designed to both entertain and educate participants. Among these were Bins Around the World, which showcased different recycling practices from various countries, and a Bin Sorting Game that tested participants' knowledge on correctly sorting different types of waste. Those who successfully completed the quiz were rewarded with a limited-edition Shard tote bag, encouraging further engagement.
In addition to the games, Recorra demonstrated innovative recycling solutions, such as plastic stools made from sweet wrappers—a type of plastic that is notoriously difficult to recycle. This example illustrated how even challenging materials can be repurposed, driving home the message of environmental responsibility.
The event also provided valuable insights into what happens to the buildings’ waste after collection and showcased recycling practices from other countries, broadening the occupiers' understanding of global waste management efforts.
Following the event, Park House introduced several improvements to its recycling infrastructure, including the installation of a bin press and a cardboard baler machine. These upgrades have already led to a 15.3% increase in recycling at Park House, with hopes that the additional training and awareness-raising activities will continue to boost recycling rates across the site.
By focusing on both education and action, The Shard and Park House’s recycling initiative successfully fostered greater environmental awareness among building occupants. With continued efforts like these, it is hoped that recycling rates across all assets will see sustained improvement in the future.
